Shopify SEO Agency for the Theme, Collections and Product Data Google Reads

Matcha Growth is a Shopify SEO agency that fixes what the platform decides for you: Liquid theme code, collection filters, app output, product schema and the agent-ready checkout Shopify switches on by default. We deliver sales, not just rankings.

What Is a Shopify SEO Agency?

A Shopify SEO agency is an SEO team that works inside Shopify’s rules: its Liquid theme templates (Shopify’s template language), fixed URL folders, apps, collection filters and product data. Shopify makes many choices for you. Every product lives under /products/ and every category under /collections/, and those folder names can’t be changed. The job is knowing which defaults help, which hurt and which you can override.

That platform layer sits on top of general ecommerce SEO services, which cover collection strategy, copy and revenue reporting on any store. Shopify adds its own problems. It also hands the same defaults to a lot of your competitors. Shopify says its merchants made more than 14% of U.S. online sales in 2025, by its own math in its Q4 2025 investor deck (2026). Anything Shopify gives you for free, those stores got too.

Shopify SEO Problems We Fix

✓

Product cards linking to /collections/…/products/… copies instead of the real product URL

✓

Filter and tag URLs left open to Google, or blocked when one of them deserved its own collection

✓

Apps adding a second Product schema block that disagrees with the theme’s on price or stock

✓

Code from apps you uninstalled years ago, still loading on every page

✓

Shopify Markets subfolders that repeat the U.S. page with a different currency

✓

Audits built on the products sitemap that flag your homepage as a missing product

The Shopify Defaults We Check First

We check Shopify’s defaults first because every store inherits them, whether anyone chose them or not. Some are good. Others quietly split your rankings across duplicate URLs or feed bad data to the tools you rely on.

Collection-Aware Product URLs

Collection-aware product URLs are copies of a product page that some themes create, like /collections/shirts/products/white-oxford next to /products/white-oxford. A product in five collections can get five extra URLs. Shopify points the canonical tag (the line that tells Google which copy is the original) at the /products/ version. Internal links still point at the copies. The usual cause is one Liquid filter, “within: collection”, in the product card snippet. We remove it so every internal link lands on the canonical URL.

Filter and Tag URLs in Robots.txt

Shopify’s default robots.txt (the file that tells crawlers which URLs to skip) blocks some filtered collection URLs and leaves others open. When we read the live robots.txt files of three Shopify stores on October 27, 2026, the default rules blocked sorted collection URLs, combined tag URLs and any collection URL with two or more filters applied. A collection with a single filter stayed crawlable. That’s a sensible default. We don’t block single-filter URLs on reflex. If “linen shirts” has real search demand, it earns a real collection with its own copy, and the filter stays a filter. Robots.txt is editable through the robots.txt.liquid template, so we change it only with a reason.

The Products Sitemap Includes Your Homepage

Every Shopify products sitemap lists the store’s homepage. Each Shopify Markets language version adds its own homepage row, written without a trailing slash, like /en-ca instead of /en-ca/. A sitemap-versus-catalog check will flag the homepage as a missing product. Scripts that only match /en-ca/ with the slash also read each locale one URL short. We filter both before counting.

Apps That Write to Your Theme

Apps change what Google reads on Shopify. A review app or SEO app can add its own Product schema (the code that tells Google a product’s price and stock status) next to the theme’s, so one page carries two Product blocks with different prices or stock status. Some review widgets load with JavaScript after the page renders, which keeps the reviews out of the HTML a crawler reads first. Older apps that wrote into theme files can keep loading after you uninstall them.

Shopify Markets for International Stores

Shopify Markets serves each country or language on its own subfolder or domain and adds hreflang tags (the tags that tell Google which version to show in which country). It doesn’t make those pages worth ranking. A Canadian subfolder that repeats the U.S. page in Canadian dollars gives Google little reason to rank it in Canada. Subfolder names follow Shopify’s rules, too. A secondary market needs a language-and-country code like /fr-ca, because bare /fr folders are reserved for your primary market, according to Shopify’s help center. We check which markets have their own search demand before anyone writes market copy.

UCP and Agentic Checkout on Shopify

Agentic checkout on Shopify is already switched on, so it can’t set your store apart. Shopify enabled the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard that lets AI shopping agents search a catalog and buy, across its stores by default. On October 27, 2026, UCP Checker found a valid UCP profile on 10,919 of the 11,174 Shopify stores it checks, or 97.7%. Custom and headless stores were the reverse: 161 of 3,915. Every verified Shopify store declared checkout support.

All three stores we checked that day listed an agents.md instruction file for AI agents in an agentic discovery sitemap, sitemap_agentic_discovery.xml. Two also pointed to it from robots.txt, with Shopify, not the merchant, named as the contact. It’s a platform default. An audit that credits you for UCP is grading Shopify.

An agent can only recommend a product from the data it reads: titles, variants, prices, stock status and the pages that describe them. Each assistant shows different sources, too. For the same product query, the ChatGPT and Gemini interfaces shared only 5.4% of displayed source domains on average in a 2026 university audit of AI product recommendations. A store has to be worth citing on each one.

On Shopify, product schema comes from the theme or an app, so when it shows a wrong price or stock status, the cause is usually a Liquid snippet or an app block. Fix that first. We check that the schema, the page and the Merchant Center feed (the product data Google Shopping reads) agree, then cover citations through our ChatGPT and AI search optimization.

How Our Shopify SEO Works

1

Audit

You get the theme, app and URL problems holding back your collections and products, each traced to the Liquid file or app that causes it.

2

Strategy

You get a written call on every filter, tag and Markets URL type: which become collections, which stay crawlable, and which apps earn their place.

3

Execution

We write the collection copy and schema. Liquid and robots.txt changes arrive as tickets with the exact code fix and acceptance criteria, ready for your developer.

4

Reporting

You see each Shopify change read in Search Console against matched weekdays, with brand searches split out, so a brand spike never passes for SEO.

Brands We’ve Worked With

Nimble Made sells dress shirts on Shopify. Our SEO work grew organic revenue at the San Marino, California company from $0 to $14,000 a month.

Michael, fractional CMO of an 8-9 figure pet brand we’ve worked with, compares paid media and SEO this way: “It’s a spigot that you turn on and off that you have to keep pumping dollars into to get dollars out of. SEO is different.” He names the catch in the same breath: “you make that upfront investment, and you don’t see the immediate ROI.” The brand asked to stay anonymous.

We also run our own sites. In 2020 our founder, Colin Ma, sold two of his websites for six figures each, one he built from scratch and one he bought and grew, according to his 2021 Niche Pursuits interview.

Shopify SEO FAQs

Is Shopify good for SEO?

Shopify is good for SEO on speed and the basics, and weaker on URL control. In HTTP Archive’s 2025 Web Almanac, 76% of Shopify sites with real-user Chrome data passed all three Core Web Vitals checks on mobile. Loading speed was the check they failed most, with 86% passing it. The trade-offs are fixed folders like /products/ and /collections/, and apps that add code. Both are workable.

Does Shopify have an SEO tool?

Shopify has built-in SEO settings that cover the basics. Each product, collection and page has fields for its title tag, meta description and URL handle, and Shopify builds the XML sitemap and a default robots.txt for you. It doesn’t do keyword research, rank tracking or content planning. Apps cover some of that. Google Search Console is free and shows what Google actually indexes.

How much does Shopify SEO cost?

Shopify SEO cost depends on catalog size, theme condition and how much collection copy you need, so we scope it on a call instead of publishing a rate. We work on retainers only. That means one flat monthly number, no setup fees and a stated minimum term.

Do you need Shopify Plus for good SEO?

You don’t need Shopify Plus for good SEO. The controls that matter most for search, including theme code, robots.txt.liquid, URL redirects and Shopify Markets subfolders, are available on standard plans. Plus adds checkout customization and higher limits, which matter more for operations than rankings. Pick the plan for how you sell. Then fix the theme you have.

Will Shopify’s agentic checkout get products into ChatGPT?

Shopify’s agentic checkout lets AI agents buy from your store, but it doesn’t decide which products they recommend. UCP Checker found a valid UCP profile on 97.7% of the Shopify stores it tracked as of October 27, 2026, so having one sets nobody apart. Recommendations follow product data and the pages AI tools cite. Ask twice and the picks can change.
