Home Services SEO

Home Services SEO for Contractors and the Trades

Our home services SEO is built to get HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing and pool businesses booked from Google, through the slow months and the emergency calls. We deliver sales, not just rankings.

What Is Home Services SEO?

Home services SEO is search engine optimization for businesses that do the work at the customer’s home, such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, pool and landscaping companies. It covers your Google Business Profile, the map pack (the three businesses Google lists beside a map) and the service pages on your website. Calls are the goal.

Trades work differently. You drive to the customer, so your profile is usually a service-area profile (one that shows the towns you cover instead of a street address). Demand swings with the weather and spikes when something breaks. And the number that decides everything is your cost per booked job.

Why Home Services SEO Matters for Trade Businesses

Home services SEO matters because homeowners hire out more of the work, and they search for it in sharp seasonal and emergency spikes. Timing decides who gets the call.

15.9%

DIY’s share of homeowner improvement spending in 2023, a historic low, down from about a quarter in the mid-2000s (Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies, Improving America’s Housing 2025)

30x+

more US searches for “pool opening” in May 2026 (33,100) than in January 2026 (880), in Google Ads data we pulled through DataForSEO on October 27, 2026

2x

the click price for “emergency plumber” ($74.89 average) against “plumber” ($35.28) in the same pull. “Emergency electrician” cost twice “electrician” too

Pros get the rest of that spending. Our search counts are US monthly totals, rounded the way Google rounds them, and click prices are US averages.

Home Services SEO Challenges We Solve

✓

Your Business Profile shows your home address, or no service area at all

✓

Pool or lawn season starts, and your seasonal pages go up the same week

✓

You pay for “emergency” clicks at night, then the phone goes to voicemail

✓

One “Services” page lists everything you do, so no single service ranks

✓

You buy marketplace leads and can’t say what a booked job costs from each channel

✓

You cover 30 towns, and your site proves work in none of them

How We Run Home Services SEO

We run home services SEO starting from cost, then structure, then the calendar. Cost goes first.

1

Cost Per Booked Job

You get a baseline first. We take your last 90 days and divide what you spent on each channel by the jobs it booked. SEO has to beat that number.

2

Service and City Map

Next, the structure. We pull the top pages of contractors who rank in your trade and read which page types earn the visits. Then we map each service you sell to each town you genuinely serve.

3

Season and Emergency Plan

Busy-season pages go live early. Google needs time to find and rank them before searches climb. Emergency pages exist only for services someone answers after hours.

4

Profile, Reviews and Reporting

Your profile gets the right categories and the towns you actually drive to. Your crew asks for a review on every job. Each month you see calls and booked jobs by service and by town, next to the baseline. Flops get reported too.

What’s Included

Cost-Per-Job Baseline

A cost per booked job for every channel today.

Service-Area Profile Setup

Address hidden if customers never visit, the right category, your real towns.

Service and City Page Map

A page for each service you sell, and city pages only where you have jobs to show.

Seasonal Page Calendar

Heating, cooling, storm or pool-season pages published ahead of the climb.

Emergency Page Check

After-hours pages, profile hours and your phone telling one story.

Monthly Report

Calls and booked jobs by service and town, including what didn’t work.

Service and City Structure Changes by Trade

The right service and city structure for a contractor’s site depends on the trade. We learned that building demo sites for six trades, from HVAC to landscaping. The brands are fictional. In July 2026 we pulled real Ahrefs traffic estimates for well-ranked contractors in each trade and read which pages earned the visits.

One question decided each site map. Which page type earns the visits that skip the homepage? For HVAC, plumbing and electrical, it was service pages filed under the trade, as in /air-conditioning/repair/. Electrical sites that tucked services under a generic folder like /our-services/ got almost none of that traffic.

Then the trades split. For roofers, city pages carried the traffic the homepage didn’t. One small roofer’s best city page, /roof-repair-[town]/ at the root of the site, drew an estimated 339 monthly visits. A competitor’s bare city pages under /service-areas/ drew 4 each. The likely difference is the phrase in the URL, roof repair plus the town. General contractors needed a cost hub. All six People Also Ask questions (Google’s expandable question boxes) on the two contractor searches we pulled were about cost, so answer the cost question on your site. Landscapers needed guides. On three of the four landscaping sites we checked, rated 19 to 29 on Ahrefs Domain Rating (a 0 to 100 link authority measure), plant guides and idea posts outdrew the service pages. One site’s second-best page was a shrub guide.

City pages have to earn their place. We adopted the thumb test and built a script for it. Hide the town name and see whether the page could be about anywhere. All 36 city pages on our own demo sites failed, which our local SEO page covers. Back each one with jobs and reviews from that town.

Plan Pages Around Your Season

Plan pages around your season by publishing them before demand climbs, because a new page needs time to get crawled and ranked. The climb is steep. In our October 2026 pull, US searches for “lawn aeration” rose from 27,100 in January 2026 to 201,000 in March and April, with a second peak each fall. “Chimney sweep” climbs every fall and stays high into winter. It hit 135,000 in January 2026, five times the June 2026 level.

Every trade has a curve. Climate bends it. Many Southern California pools never close, so a pool company there sees a flatter year than one in Ohio. We pull the curve for your service area, then schedule pages and profile updates ahead of it.

Emergency Clicks Cost About Twice as Much

Emergency clicks cost about twice as much as the plain trade term, in both trades we checked. That premium is yours to skip. Every emergency call that reaches you through your profile or an organic listing avoids it.

An emergency page needs someone answering. If your profile says open 24 hours and the phone goes to voicemail at 9 p.m., the click is wasted, and the review that follows can hurt. We build emergency pages only for services you staff after hours. Then we set your profile hours to match.

What a Booked Job Costs, by Channel

A booked job costs a different amount on every channel, so price each channel per booked job and weigh it against your average ticket. For scale, the average professional home improvement project cost $7,800 in 2023, against $2,600 in materials for a DIY one (Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies, 2025). On Google Ads you buy clicks. On Angi you buy a homeowner’s name, and Angi says it matches each request with up to five pros (Angi pro help center). On your Business Profile you pay nothing per call.

Some of what a marketplace sells you started on Google anyway. In the federal search antitrust case, the court found that 33% to 88% of specialized vertical providers’ online traffic, depending on the vertical, flows through general search engines via organic links or ads (U.S. District Court for D.C., United States v. Google, 2024). The opinion doesn’t break out home services. Our read is that some marketplace leads began as Google searches, and you then pay the marketplace for them.

Marketplaces still have a job. They ring the phone this week, and SEO takes months. Keep the paid channel that clears your cost per job while organic builds, then cut it. Our pay-per-click page covers how we plan paid search next to SEO.

Home Services SEO FAQs

How much does home services SEO cost?

Home services SEO with us costs one flat monthly retainer, with a stated minimum term and no setup or build fees. We don’t publish a price. Scope depends on how many services and towns you need to win and how crowded your trade is in those towns. We set the number on a call, after looking at your profile and map pack.

How long does SEO take for a home service business?

SEO for a home service business takes months to carry real call volume. How many depends on your trade, your towns and who already holds the map pack. Season matters too. A pool-opening page published in May is already late, so we publish seasonal pages ahead of the climb. If you need calls next week, a paid channel does that job.

Is SEO still worth it for home services with AI search?

SEO is still worth it for home services, because a homeowner with a leaking water heater still searches and calls someone. AI assistants that suggest contractors draw on the same material SEO builds. That means your Business Profile, your reviews, and pages that say plainly what you do and where. We work on both.

Should a home-based contractor show an address on Google?

A home-based contractor usually shouldn’t show an address on Google. Google’s Business Profile guidelines say to hide your address if customers don’t visit it, and to set a service area instead. A visible home address also tells every customer where you live. We set you up as a service-area business, listing the towns you actually drive to. Customers find you by town.
