Automotive SEO
Automotive SEO for Car Dealerships
Our automotive SEO gets car dealerships found for the searches that sell cars and fill service bays: the used models on your lot, the repairs your shop does, and your dealership’s name. We deliver sales, not just rankings.
What Is Automotive SEO?
Automotive SEO is the work of getting a car dealership found on Google when local shoppers search for a car it sells or a repair it does. That happens in three places. The map pack (the three businesses listed beside a map), the regular results under it, and the AI answers written from both.
A dealership website is mostly inventory. Each car on the lot gets a VDP (vehicle detail page, one page per car). Most local businesses never have a page expire. A dealer loses one every time a car sells.
Why Automotive SEO Matters for Dealers
Automotive SEO matters because listing sites take most of the model searches a dealer should own. On October 27, 2026 we pulled Google’s top organic results for used-car searches in Anaheim and Riverside. Both are Southern California markets.
of the top 8 or 9 organic results for ‘used cars for sale’ plus the city went to dealership websites, across five wordings of the search in Anaheim and Riverside (our DataForSEO pulls, October 27, 2026)
of the top 9 or 10 organic results went to listing sites such as Autotrader, Edmunds, CarGurus and Capital One’s car-buying site, on each of three used model searches for the RAV4 in Anaheim and the CR-V in Riverside (same pulls)
average cost per click for ‘ford service near me’, against $5.81 for ‘ford dealership near me’. Service clicks also cost more than dealership clicks for Toyota and Honda (Google Ads data via DataForSEO, US, October 2026)
Dealers held the other results, mostly with the wrong page. They ranked with new-model pages, a homepage, a certified pre-owned list, a general used-car page and a model research page. Only two used-car dealers ranked with a used page for the exact model, one in each city. The listing sites build standing pages by model and city, some down to the model year. We start there.
Service searches break differently. In our pull for ‘honda service anaheim’, only two of the nine organic results were service pages. Yelp, Facebook and Carfax took four. A lost service search is expensive to buy back with ads.
One caveat. These are snapshot searches, run from a US-wide location with the city typed in. Locals may see a different mix.
Automotive SEO Challenges We Solve
Sold cars leave dead pages behind, or redirects that all point at your homepage
Listing sites outrank you for the models on your own lot, in your own city
Your vehicle descriptions are the same text your inventory feed sends to every listing site
Your model research pages carry the same manufacturer-program copy as other dealers on your platform
Service searches land on your sales pages, or on Yelp and Facebook
Your service department shares one Google Business Profile, and its sales hours, with the showroom
How We Run Automotive SEO
We run dealership SEO in a fixed order. Inventory URLs and profiles come first.
Access and Inventory Audit
First, ownership. We confirm who holds your Business Profiles, your website platform login and your analytics. Then we trace what happens to a car’s page after it sells, and list the model and service searches you lose in your city. You get a short list, ranked by how many shoppers each problem costs you.
Profiles by Department
Google lets a dealership run separate Business Profiles for sales, service and parts. A new-car dealer can add one per brand it sells. Used-only dealers can’t. We give each profile its own category and hours, and its own phone number where you have one.
Pages That Outlive the Inventory
Every model you stock more than now and then gets a permanent used page for your city, listing the cars you have today. Sold car pages with outside links or steady visits point to it. Service pages get written per job and per brand, for the town your service drive (the lane where customers drop off cars) serves.
Reviews and Reporting
A review request process for the sales floor and the service drive. Each month you see calls, forms and service appointments from search, by department. Google Analytics counts clicks from AI Overviews as plain Google organic. We say so in the report.
What’s Included
Department Profiles
Sales, service and parts profiles in your name, each with the category Google recommends for it.
Sold-Vehicle Rules
A written rule for every sold car’s page: redirect, 404 or 410, decided by its links and visits.
Used Model Pages
Permanent pages for the models you stock, built to compete with the listing sites in your city.
Service Pages
A page for each repair and maintenance job you want booked, written for the towns your service drive serves.
Platform Tickets
Fixes only your website provider can make, written up as tickets their team can act on.
Monthly Report
Calls, leads and service appointments from search, by department, in plain language.
What Our Dealer Advice Is Built On
Our dealer advice comes from the October 2026 searches above, Google’s own rules for dealer profiles, and local SEO we run in other industries. We have no dealership case study yet. Our founder, Colin Ma, has done enterprise SEO work for Toyota and Lexus. Those logos are background, not dealership results.
BRANDS WE’VE WORKED WITH

At a San Diego dental practice, the previous agency still held the Google Business Profile. Getting it back came first. The story is in our San Diego dental SEO case study. Find out who holds your dealership’s profiles before you change website providers.
Pages for nearby towns get a check of their own. We use a thumb test: cover the town name and see whether the page is still about that town. We ran it on the 36 city pages across our own fictional demo sites for home service trades. All 36 failed. We rebuilt the template.
Where We Disagree With Common Dealer SEO Advice
Some dealer SEO advice is stale.
Free vehicle listings are gone, and Search no longer uses the markup
Google’s free vehicle listings are gone from Search. Its vehicle listings developer page says the organic auto listings no longer appear and listing feeds are no longer processed. A Search Central post from June 12, 2025 announced the phase-out of Vehicle Listing structured data in Search, and Search Console dropped its report that September. Other systems can still read the markup. If a vendor bills it as Google SEO, ask what it does now.
A sold car’s page shouldn’t redirect to your homepage
A homepage redirect wastes the page. Google’s site-move guidance warns that pointing many old URLs at one irrelevant page, such as the homepage, may be treated as a soft 404 (a missing page dressed up as a live one). We use a simple rule. A sold car’s page with outside links or steady visits gets a 301 (permanent redirect) to that model’s used page. The rest return a 404 (page not found), or a 410 once the car is gone for good. Under RFC 9110 (2022), the HTTP standard, a 410 says the removal is likely permanent and that the site owner wants links to it removed.
Expect sold pages to linger anyway. In its 2025 remedies opinion in US v. Google, the court found that quality and popularity signals help Google decide how often to crawl a page. Our read is that a VDP few people visit can sit in results after the car is gone. That’s one more reason the model page should carry your rankings.
Fix profiles and service pages before buying AI visibility
AI search packages are the newest line on dealer SEO invoices. In that 2025 opinion, the court found that commercial queries are not, at present, a common use case for generative AI apps, and so far haven’t pulled commercial searches away from search engines. The court also noted testimony that this is expected to change. Car shopping is commercial. AI answers about local businesses also draw on much of the same material: profiles, reviews and pages that say plainly what you sell. We do ChatGPT and AI search optimization. For a dealer, it comes after the basics.
Automotive SEO FAQs
Can a car dealership have separate Google Business Profiles for sales and service?
A car dealership can run separate Google Business Profiles for the dealership and for departments like sales, service and parts, under Google’s guide for auto dealers. A new-car dealer can add one per brand it sells. Used-car dealers can’t. Google suggests the category Car dealer for sales, Car service for maintenance and Auto parts business for parts.
What should happen to a vehicle page after the car sells?
A sold car’s page should redirect to the closest live page or return an error, depending on what it’s worth. If other sites link to it or it still gets visits, we 301 it to that model’s used page for your city. Otherwise it returns a 404, or a 410. Never the homepage.
Does Google still show dealer inventory for free?
Google no longer shows dealer inventory for free in Search. Its developer page for vehicle listings says the organic auto listings no longer appear and vehicle listing feeds are no longer processed. Google announced the phase-out in June 2025. Your website does that work now. Used model pages and inventory lists carry it. Google’s vehicle ads are a separate, paid program.
Doesn’t the website provider’s SEO package already cover this?
The website provider’s package may cover part of it, so we start by reading what it includes. Many dealers run on a platform approved by their manufacturer’s website program, and the platform controls templates, URLs and sold-car pages. We work inside those limits. Fixes only the provider can make go to them as tickets.
How do you charge for dealership SEO?
We charge for dealership SEO as a monthly retainer: one flat monthly number, a stated minimum term, and no setup or build fees. Scope depends on how many rooftops, brands and departments you need to win, and how crowded your market is. We scope it on a call. Before that call, we pull the searches for your city.
